EA updates getting in the way of DLC sales?

Something comes to mind when it comes to this shared post... EA is affecting their own DLC sales. Technically, so are other developers... so apply this to all those that do similar.

They have to avoid releasing games incomplete (as mentioned before) because what happens is... an update (although it potentially fixes a problem) requires space on a hard drive. If you know like I know... Battlefield 3 required multiple updates (...hefty ones), and as you read in the shared post below... Battlefield 4 is no different.

What happens because of that though? Those updates require space on a drive, and unless OneDrive's cloud storage is increased for XBLG members (which it should be)... the available space on your drive is going to decrease each and every time you download those updates (duh on the day)... resulting in limited space for other things.

Other things like what... you may ask? Well... things like DLC for the game. Your hard drive shouldn't be eaten up by one game anyway... unless the full game is on there or something (and its a huge game)... but the limited space decreases sales. There are some gamers that don't have the money to buy more drives, and some don't have the data through their ISP to download those updates AND dlc AND game online, etc.

Where will the trade off come in?

  • If you can't download any additional stuff to that hard drive, the money spent on DLC's will go to waste, or they won't be purchased if capacity is already met.
  • You may have to delete some of those updates in order to get the DLC, but they may not function without that update... leaving you screwed.
  • You may have to reserve all the space on your drive for that specific game (or most of it), and possibly delete every other game off of it (based on size)... which would suck. Some gamers have to go through their achievements in order to remember all the games they've purchased via download, there are plenty that would rather go in and play a game without re-downloading it. If space won't allow for two games you prefer to play often... one would basically get in the way of the other.
  • If the budget is already limited, and you have to buy additional memory just for large updates (which isn't right) and you don't have the money to cover your XBLG, you still won't be able to enjoy the DLC (at least until you can afford to)... sooo... they have to rethink this (though they are aware that they have to do better based on backlash).

Another thing about those updates, is that when the support for the game is gone... there won't be any access to those things in order to enjoy your game (if your hard drive fails or something causing you to need them again). I'm not talking about updates for online multiplayer when the game is no longer supported, i'm talking about the updates for the single player campaign... that should've been there in the first place (for consoles at least).

I think that a solution could be found in updating and replacing existing updates to keep the required space to a minimum.

This isn't something that falls on EA alone, this vid post just brought this to mind... because there are various things that turn gamers off and possibly away for good. Some people don't mind dealing with such things... (if that's you... enjoy) but others do, and Nintendo-Demand will continue bringing these things up for the purpose of better. It doesn't benefit gamers or the industry to have a dwindling audience.
