Super Smash Bros Direct awesomeness + Are all Casual gamers really just Casual gamers?

Super Smash Bros is looking Super Smash-tastic... are you ready to RUUMMBLLLLLLEEEEE??????!!!!!!
This Super Smash Bros. Direct... was awesome, and revealed that the 3DS owners will get it first this summer (2014). Is that a bad thing? Well... it sucks for Wii U owners, but Mario Kart 8 is coming up on the Wii U (pre-order if you want first dibs), and other games will be there to enjoy in the mean time as they put in more development time to deliver the best console version of SSB yet. So although it sucks that it will be coming out in the Winter of 2014, rest assured that there is a good reason. It won't be released in the Summer in an unfinished form... just for the sake of making money asap (requiring patches left & right).

On a good note, both versions of the game will be playable at 60FPS (with supporting characters at 30FPS)... because the game deserves to play smoothly if its going to be on home console or handheld. I am very interested in seeing how they will interact, which might include some cross-platform play for the similar levels available on both... but I think it will end up being something that involves the Nintendo Network ID and the ability to benefit playing either game.

They really really made us happy when they mentioned that the game will also be playable online on the 3DS (woohoo!), and that's one of those Nintendo Demand's that we made when we initially heard otherwise. The ability to play it online gives 3DS owners the chance to enjoy game time with other players a lot more, and in some cases it gives you the chance to actually play with others instead of being stuck playing solo because there is no one around (more often than not) to play local multiplayer.

The game will include boss battles... but not just that, you can use the bosses to your advantage to damage other players. (For example) When a select player defeats Yellow Devil (with that final hit)... he or she gets to use the destruction of the boss against the other players (so opponents should keep that in mind). Opponents will be stuck to Yellow Devil if they are near him when he is defeated or they get to close, and they will be affected when he goes... BOOM!

There will be 2 game play types for online play, these include:

For Fun: This mode allows you to play random stages (excluding Final Destinations) online using all items, only records wins, and its dedicated to smash battles only

For Glory: This mode includes Final Destination stages only, there are no items, 1 vs 1 battles are possible, and Wins & Losses are recorded

For Glory is one of those modes that is perfect for tournaments (to me at least), although the other could work for tournaments as well, and the offline multiplayer is great for tournaments too since you get to make the rules.

These are things that may cause you to gain a Temporary Ban from online play

  • Starting and not playing
  • Relentless targeting of an individual player
  • Repeated self-destructs
  • Frequent dropping (due to a bad internet connection)
  • Cheats
  • Baseless reporting (basically reporting someone for doing nothing wrong)
There are players that may have a problem with this, but they want the game to be challenging, and balanced for all opponents, not matches that result in worthlessness because a player is cheating (whatever that may be based on a hack or something). Also bad internet connections will be affected too, and I think its fair because they want the online matches to be quality ones that don't include laggers (playing online games against laggers... absolutely sucks). The good thing though... is that they don't charge you to pay online, so you can use that money on your internet if you want to play via a better connect or get the Wii LAN adapter (as Masahiro Sakurai mentioned).

Items, assist trophies, and Pokémon make a most welcomed return in this game... these were some of the most exciting reveals in the presentation for me.

Not only will Pokeballs make a return, but there will also be Master Balls that contain Legendary Pokemon like Xerneas & Arceus.

Other Pokemon presented in the presentation include:

Eevee

Staryu
Metagross
Fennekin
Meloetta
Gogoat
Entei
Deoxys
Palkia
Kyurem
Victini
Keldeo
and freaking Charizard & Greninja!
Etc.

Items presented, include:

Beam Sword

Bumper
Smart Bomb
Motion-Sensor Bomb
Pow Block
Beetle
Fire Bar
Back Shield
Bombchu
Fairy Bottle
Ore Club
X Bomb
Hocotate Bomb
Rocket Belt
Steel Diver

Assist trophies include (available in All Star Mode):

Andross

Devil
Knuckle Joe
Saki Amamiya
Lyn
Nintendog
Waluigi
Dr. Wright
Skull Kid
Mother Brain
Midna
Ashley
Dark Samus
Chain Chomp
Isabelle
Elec Man
Color TV-Game 15 (pong)

These assists are great, but so are the Final Smashes. I won't get into detail about those, but check out this image... expect to see these other Megaman characters in the game for Megaman's Final Smash. How I wish they were part of the party as playable characters... but who knows, they just might be, either way... at least they make an appearance to represent for Megaman fans!
Maybe Mighty No. 9 will appear in a Super Smash Bros. one of these days... maybe even these versions as a free DLC character down the line.

Smash Run (exclusive for the 3DS version) is a battle game that reminds me of a platformer on steroids, they are full of power ups that will be used in the  match between characters, and up to 4 players will be able to enjoy this mode simultaneously. The enemies in Smash Run are randomized (and come from a variety of games), so you get to enjoy variety in each stage (which lasts 5 minutes). I'm sure there will also be something specific to the Wii U version as well, and what I like about this is that it increases the justification for a dual purchase.

I like what they are planning to do with the Global Smash Power ranking system also, because that increases the replay value of playing solo... because you have another avenue to challenge players from around the world.

Casual... Smasual: Are Casual Players really as "Casual" as some think?

Someone commented to one of our older posts today (and this isn't calling them out or anything, it just made me think of the subject), so i'm taking this opportunity to explain a few things because some gamers get discredited when they are actually a lot more committed to gaming than a casual gamer.

By definition... this is what "Casual" means (so check it out and then i'll get back to the point being made):

ca·su·al ˈkaZHo͞oəl
adjective
adjective casual
  1. relaxed and unconcerned.
  2. not regular or permanent, in particular.
  3. happening by chance; accidental.
    • without formality of style or manner, in particular (of clothing) suitable for everyday wear rather than formal occasions.
      noun
      noun casual plural noun casuals
      1. a person who does something irregularly.
        • a worker employed on an irregular or temporary basis.
      2. clothes or shoes suitable for everyday wear rather than formal occasions.
        Web definitions
marked by blithe unconcern; "an ability to interest casual students"; "showed a casual disregard for cold weather"; "an utterly insouciant financial policy"; "an elegantly insouciant manner"; "drove his car with nonchalant abandon"; "was polite in a teasing nonchalant manner"

Looking at the definition (beyond the noun that represents that casual wear is suitable for every day; since the games are playable every day)... it's basically representing (in regards to gaming) the friend that comes over and just happens to play the game based on request or they're just killing time (and things on that "whatever" level). The gamer that made an effort to buy the game because they wanted it... is showing a bit more than casual interest in the game to be discredited and listed as a "Casual Gamer".

Why is this being mentioned in the SSB post? Well... the topic was brought up in regards to the comment posted (which included) "Casual Players" buying the Wii U more so after Super Smash Bros. & Mario Kart 8 get released. It wasn't a negative comment, the person is optimistic about sales more so picking up after these games get released, and I agree... I just had to chime in on the whole "Casual" thing.

These games get a lot of attention, a lot of praise, and a crap load of gameplay (there are still tournaments being held for the GameCube version), and again, this isn't about the person that brought this to mind... but dedicated gamers are likely to buy these more so than casual ones (though some casual gamers will play the game). Its easy to say this because a lot of gamers have been dumped into the casual gamer category... even I and fellow Nin-Dems have been labeled casual gamers from time to time. Never mind that I am a multi-platform gamer, it was based on my playing of Nintendo games, and dismissed (by some because I also play FPS games, etc, etc, etc.)... though that doesn't matter because playing Nintendo games or games on their platforms doesn't make a person a casual gamer. A casual gamer isn't all that interested in gaming... they play it "Casually" (while non-gamers don't play games at all... which can change... either way) and more power to them, but as for everyone else... they are gamers also. Remember that, and game on!

Last but not least... Bruce Lee enters the MMA arena!

Some suspect EA is trying to boost sales for the EA Sports UFC franchise, but that's kind of what should be done in each game by doing something awesome (a stable game shouldn't get props for being stable because that's how it should be anyway). As long as they give the man justice in this game... that works for me, he was extremely talented during his time on this earth... with that said he might not be given complete justice based on his capability because the game might end up extremely unbalanced. This isn't to discredit the fighters who could give him some actual competition and could possibly beat him in reality... but that's far from every single fighter in the UFC (and the player's skill is still what determines a match's results).

Either way.... If they do it right, things should work out via a worthwhile experience that leaves you feeling like the almighty dragon himself. WAHHHHHHTAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
